Whiskey tasting basics
How many whiskies should I pour for a tasting?
Three to five is the sweet spot for your guests. Much more than that and palates start to blur together before the night’s over.
How much whiskey should I pour per person?
About half an ounce per whiskey: enough to taste it without dulling your palate three pours in. Save the full pour for after the tasting’s done.
What order should I present whiskies in?
Light to heavy. Start with your lowest-proof, least peated pour and build up to the boldest. Leading with something heavy and smoky flattens everything that follows it for your guests.
How do I run a blind tasting?
The simplest way: wrap each bottle (a brown paper bag works fine) and number them, so guests can pour their own. Numbering the glasses instead works too, but gets unwieldy once you’re pouring several whiskies for a full table. Full walkthrough, including how to run the reveal.
Do I need to be an expert taster to host?
No. Neither you nor your guests need to be. This isn’t a test, and there’s no wrong answer; the goal is noticing what you notice, not describing it like a pro would.
Is a whiskey tasting good for a work or team event?
Yes. It’s become a genuinely popular team-building format. A guided flight gives people something structured to talk about, which tends to land better than a forced icebreaker.
Using StillNote
Do my guests need to download an app?
No. Guests join with just a name through a link or QR code. No account, no download.
How long do I have to use my Single Session pass?
Thirty days from purchase. It’s a single session pass, not a standing subscription. Once you use it or the window closes, that’s the credit spent.
Is there a limit on how many guests can join?
No guest limit. Only the number of spirits in a tasting is capped: two on Free, ten on Single Session or Annual. How many people show up is entirely your call. Guided, intimate tastings work best around 5-10 guests, while bigger, more social gatherings scale further with a self-guided, station-based setup: see how to host a whiskey tasting.
Can I use this for a distillery or commercial event?
Distillery and tasting-room support is coming. Join the waitlist to hear when it’s ready.
